Many Layers: Makeup Prep Update

My favorite makeup prep products

I’ve been making a lot of updates to my daily makeup prep over the last few months, and I need to share!

As I’ve gotten older, makeup prep has definitely gotten more important. My skin is drier and less resilent. If I want my makeup to apply smoothly and last all day, you can bet I have a good moisturizer on underneath!

Recently I realized that while the products I was using for makeup prep helped, I might need a little more moisture. I wasn’t really maximizing my products either. I wanted to add in some active ingredients in to the mix while upping my hydration.

I decided that rather than swapping out for a heavier duty moisturizer (which I’ve learned is a very American thing), I would add in additional lightweight products to achieve these goals. I wanted non-irritating actives that would help even out my skintone and fight the signs of aging. If they could make me more glowy as well, that sounded great!

During the recent Sephora Savings Event I picked up some new products to try out. Quick reminder that if you’re not already a member of the Sephora Beauty Insider Program, you should be! It’s free, and you get perks like points to redeem for rewards (I use mine for deluxe samples sizes for travel) or money off your purchase. It also lets me participate in the Savings Event, gets me free shipping, early access to products and many other perks. Don’t forget about how easy it is to use their Same Day Delivery and Buy Online Pickup in Store options (I might do these often myself).

Serum/Lotions

I couldn’t decide between the YSE Beauty Xtreme Glow Dewy Peptide Plumping Serum and Morning Cocktail Vitamin C Serum. So I bought both. I fully admit that I am using both products. I’m using Xtreme Glow every morning as part of makeup prep, Morning Cocktail I use at night (along with The Problem Solver), and I probably use it about 50% of the time in the morning as well. I sometimes decide to layer it in there, sometimes not. (I’m deciding based on vibes, I should probably be more consistent with this.)

I’m really loving all the YSE products I’ve been using, and have started recommending them to friends! Morning Cocktail is a lightweight lotion consistency and sinks into my skin immediately. I love knowing that I’m getting good dose of Vitamin C for my skin, with a product that doesn’t smell like hot dog water. (If you know, you know.)  It is great under makeup or with other products at night.

Xtreme Glow is definitely a holy grail level product. It is formulated more like a serum, offers great hydration and peptides to help fight aging, while also adding luminosity. It is a bit shimmery on its own as you apply, but once it is in the skin you don’t look shimmery, you’re just glowy and hydrated. It sinks quickly into skin as well, and preps the skin perfectly for makeup. I don’t feel the need to use a primer after Xtreme Glow, though I sometimes will. This is definitely a new favorite!

Super Hydrating Mist

For days that my skin feels extra dehydrated, I’ve been first misting my face with the Biodance Collagen Peptide Jelly Mist. It’s inspired by their viral face mask, and after a few sprays I do feel like I’ve had a hydrating mask! It does feel a little tacky on the skin at first but after a few minutes that feeling is gone. It adds a lot of moisture to the skin, and I use it just on days that I think I need it.

Lightweight Lotion

Finally, my last prep step is a lightweight lotion to “lock” it all in. For the last few years I’ve been using the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Deep Hydration Serum, which is a lightweight and super hydrating lotion. I think this bottle is my 5th or 6th? I’ve gone through a lot of it!

I feel like the Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Plumping Serum is a step up in hydration and skin prep. It’s more of a lotion-serum hybrid and once I rub it into my skin I feel really plump and dewy. It does a great job of prepping my skin for makeup, I think it really acts as a primer as well as a hydrating serum.

Today’s quick makeup was really well prepped with the Biodance Mist, both YSE Serums and the Danessa Myricks serum. My makeup applied smoothly and I feel pretty good for 48!

What have you been prepping your skin with recently?
