Biggest Mistakes People Make When Buying A Phone Case

Phone cases not only make your phone look cute, but they can also protect your phone against accidental damage.

I am pretty accident prone, and I’m forever dropping my phone, even with a PopSocket on the back, so a good quality phone case, with drop protection is a must for me and my phone. Keep on reading for the biggest mistakes we make when deciding on a new phone case for our phone.

Biggest Mistakes People Make When Buying a Phone Case

Ignoring Drop Protection And Impact Ratings

When it comes to choosing a new phone case, you need to choose a case that offers proven drop protect. Cases might look strong, but that doesn’t mean it’ll protect your device when dropping it.

Many phone case manufacturers list the drop height ratings for their cases, so you know how many feet the case *should* protect the phone from, when dropped.

To say a phone has drop protection, it must have been expertly tested to see that the case does actually protect the mobile device from damage when dropped.

Obviously, not case is going to guarantee your phone will be OK when dropped, but they usually have features within the case to improve the chances your phone would be OK, like elevated edges to protect your glass screen, raised camera rings to protect your camera lenses and raised shock absorbers on the corners of the case.

Read the product reviews on the manufacturer’s website, as they’ll be likely to share if the case works at protecting phone, as they tend to be unbiased reviews, rather than relying on TikTok Shop reviews.

Buy your phone case from a specific phone case supplier, and not a retailer like Amazon. Considering how expensive phones are these days, you don’t want to risk a £1000+ phone in a cheap £10 case, when you could have spent a little more to get proper, reliable protection.

Choosing Style Over Real Protection

When you’re choosing a case, don’t focus on how nice it looks as the first factor. You should concentrate on choosing a phone case that is going to offer decent protection first, and then go for the aesthetics you prefer.

Slim phone designs may look sleek, but they offer limited drop protection, and you could end up with cracks, dents and costly repairs.

Many of the thin “skin” cases protect against surface scratches on the phone, and keep your phone clean, but they won’t help you when dropping your phone, or if the phone is crushed inside your bag.

Leather cases look premium but most leather phone cases lack shock-absorbing layers inside, so you could be at risk of damaging your phone, even though a leather case is definitely a premium phone case option.

Forgetting About Screen And Camera Lip Protection

One of the most important features you need to look for, when choosing a new phone case, is a raised lip around the screen, and a raised ring around your camera lenses.

The raised edges lift your phone off flat surfaces, so when you place your phone down, the screen shouldn’t be able to touch the table.

If you drop your phone, the raised edges on a premium phone case help to absorb the impact, and without them, the glass may hit the ground first, and you’ll end up with a cracked screen or cracked camera lenses.

When looking at cases, make sure the case as at least 1mm to 2mm raised lip above the screen, a visible raised ring around each individual camera lens, and that it has firm, shock-absorbing material around the phone’s corners.

Screen protectors are another layer of defence, and can reduce scratches, and take minor impact before the screen shoes. However, it works best when the case lip sits slightly higher than the protector. Although, be careful with camera lens protectors, as the extra glass can end up affecting the photo quality.
