Does Vaseline Go Out Of Date?

Vaseline is a must-have for everyone’s beauty collection with many amazing uses. Seeing how versatile it is, you need to know whether Vaseline can expire, and what signs to look out for, to know when your Vaseline has expired, so you don’t risk using it once the formula has spoiled, and you can throw it in the trash.

Does Vaseline Go Out Of Date?

How To Find The Date Code On The Vaseline Jar

Look for small printed codes on the Vaseline jar for the date code. The most common places for the code are on the bottom of the plastic tub, the side seam of the box (if there is one), or the label near the ingredients.

The date code could be stamped, embossed or printed with ink. It usually appears as a short alphanumeric string (with letters and numbers together) rather than an obvious expiration date.

If you do see a full date (MM/YYYY), it is likely the expiration or best-by fate, and directly indicates the Vaseline expiration date. If you can only see a batch/lot code, you can use a free online batch code checker, to figure out its production date.

If you can’t find a visible code, you can try contacting Vaseline’s customer support with the product name and any printed numbers, and they should be able to confirm any production or expiration information for you.

How Long Vaseline Typically Stays Good After Opening

Most jars or tins of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly remain usable for 2 to 3 years after opening, providing you store them properly.

The manufacturer often prints a recommended time period on the packaging, of how long an opened Vaseline will last for.

Vaseline’s formula resists microbial growth because it contains no water within the formula, so it rarely expires like cream formulas do. Over time, Vaseline can lose its texture and effectiveness, especially if its exposed to heat, sunlight or contamination from fingers.

Make sure you keep the jar tightly closed, and that you store it in a cool and dry place to prolong its shelf life. Use clean tools or wash your hands before using the Vaseline, so you’re not introducing bacteria into the pot or tin.

Signs Your Vaseline Should Be Thrown Away

To tell if your Vaseline should be thrown away, check the smell of the Vaseline. Pure petroleum jelly is almost odorless, so if you can smell a strong “crayon” smell, a chemical smell or a gasoline smell means you should throw it away.

Check the texture of the Vaseline. If the formula has separated, become grainy, dry or unusually hard, the Vaseline should be trashed.

Next, look at the color and surface of the Vaseline. If you see any yellowing, cloudiness or discoloration, it indicates age or contamination. Look for visible particle, mold or moisture within the Vaseline, as you shouldn’t ever use it if you see any of these signs of expiration.
